The Best Time to Go on Safari in East Africa

Safari Planning

East Africa is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and experience. Weather patterns and wildlife movements, particularly the Great Migration, play a huge role in determining the ideal months for your journey.

The Dry Seasons: June to October & January to February

For most travelers, the dry seasons are the absolute best time for a safari. Here's why:

Peak Wildlife Viewing

During the dry months, vegetation thins out, and water sources become scarce. This combination forces animals to congregate around the few remaining rivers and waterholes, making them much easier to spot. The grass is shorter, so you'll have clearer, unobstructed views of predators and their prey.

The Great Migration

If witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration is at the top of your list, the timing is crucial.

  • July to September: This is when the legendary river crossings typically happen at the Mara River between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara. It's a dramatic spectacle of life and death.
  • January to February: This is calving season in the Southern Serengeti. Witnessing thousands of newborn wildebeest take their first steps on the plains is a truly heartwarming (and predator-rich) experience.

Pleasant Weather

The weather during the dry seasons is generally fantastic. Expect clear, sunny skies, minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures. It's perfect for game drives and other outdoor activities.

The Wet Seasons: March to May & November to December

Don't discount the "green seasons"! While there's more rain, these months offer their own unique advantages.

Lush Landscapes & Fewer Crowds

The rains transform the savanna into a vibrant, green paradise. It's a stunning time for photography, with dramatic skies and blooming flora. As it's the low season, you'll also benefit from fewer vehicles in the parks and often lower accommodation prices.

Birdwatching Paradise

The wet seasons are a dream for birders. Migratory birds from Europe and Asia flock to East Africa, and many resident birds are in their breeding plumage, creating a kaleidoscope of color and song.

Uganda's Primates

For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, you can travel year-round. However, the dry seasons (June-August and December-February) offer more comfortable hiking conditions with less mud.

Our Recommendation

For a classic, first-time safari focused on abundant wildlife and the Great Migration, aim for the long dry season from June to October. For a different perspective with lush scenery and fewer people, consider the "green season."
